Exceedingly rare factory case colored 3rd Model Winchester 1873 lever action rifle in excellent condition with
Cody “factory” letter showing 6 special order features: 1. Case colored action. 2. Half magazine. 3. Half
0ctagon barrel. 4. Ultra rare Model 62B peep sight ((Worth about $1500.00 by itself). 5. Beach front sight. 6.
Swiss Buttplate. Plus beautiful highly grained wood. Caliber .38 WCF. Made in 1889 – ANTIQUE – NO
LICENSE REQUIRED. The factory case hardening color is quite strong on the right side of the receiver,
pretty much faded on the left side and quite vibrant on the top of the receiver, the hammer, much of the
lever and on the top and bottom tangs. The peep sight is a Winchester Model 62B sight and it was only made
for one model: the 1873. It is ULTRA rare. In Madis’ “The Winchester Book”, George pictures this sight on
page 189 and says: “…offered for many years, comparatively few were sold and they are rare today”. On
February 26 2007, an identical sight was sold on eBay for $1700.00 with 18 bids! JUST the sight!! The factory
letter also specifies a Swiss buttplate. This plate is not what I would consider a conventional Swiss buttplate
however it is obviously a special order design. It is nickel plated brass. The wood is particularly beautiful,
exhibiting a wonderful honey colored tiger stripe design with lots of original varnish remaining. It is
certainly much higher in grade than a standard rifle. It has just a few dings and dents of the sort that one
would expect on a 118 year old rifle. Nothing that really detracts from the beauty of the piece. The 24 inch
half round/octagon barrel is marked .38 WCF. All barrel address lettering is sharp and deep. Most of the
original barrel blue remains, now fading to a nice dark pewter/blue/brown color. No dings in the metal.
Excellent shiny bore with strong rifling. We are positive that this fine weapon has never had any major work
done to it outside the factory and that the colors are absolutely original factory colors. Here’s your chance to
own a museum quality ‘73 with SIX special order features.
