RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1895 RIFLE WITH US MILITARY
INSPECTOR'S MARK KSM. TEDDY ROOSEVELT'S FAVORITE
RIFLE. THIS ONE WAS MADE IN 1899 AND IS IN CALIBER .30
US (.30-40 KRAG). IT IS IN VERY NICE CONDITION AND COMES
WITH A CODY DATA SHEET.
This '95 is chambered in .30 US (.30-40 Krag). It has a 28" barrel with what
appear to be factory installed sling swivels. The barrel retains about 85% blue
and the receiver approximately 40%. The stock has been professionally
refinished and is free of dings and dents. Very, very slight sanding - hardly
noticeable. The very unusual feature of this rifle is that the hammer is stamped
very clearly: "KSM".This is the mark of US Inspector Kelley S. Morse who
inspected Winchester Model 1895 Rifles, Smith & Wesson Model 1899 38
Revolvers, Colt Model 1911 .45 Pistols and Gatling Guns from 1893 to 1915.
The US Army ordered 10,000 muskets in May of 1898. Many of these arms did
not pass the army's ridiculously rigorous inspection process. Afterwards, parts
from these rejects were used for a number of sporting rifles. (See Madis - page
475). This appears to be one of these guns. Also beloved by author Zane Gray.
