Very Nice Winchester Model 1866 Musket With
Original Bayonet. Made In 1871. Serial #31943
This is a rare Winchester! Trying to not be confused with the heavy and long single shot muskets of
the Civil War, Winchester marketed this model as the "Infantry Rifle". It was a 17 shot repeater.
Submitted to the Army's Ordnance Department's testing procedure in search of a new standard issue
rifle in 1873, this model and all other repeaters completely failed a stupidly drawn up set of tests. The
Springfield Trapdoor was adopted. I'll bet Custer would have wished that he had had '66s instead of
Springfields. The Sioux had them! Losing the competition, Oliver Winchester sold his muskets to
many South American countries, Turkey and even the Louisiana militia. This rifle is equipped with
it's original spike bayonet in excellent condition. The rifle itself has seen a bit of wear with multiple
dings in the stock but it functions perfectly. All metal is a rich plum brown. It bears regimental and
rack numbers. A wonderful collector piece for an advanced Winchester collection.
